Add keyboard shortcuts to select the next/previous tag on the Tag sidebar

Thomas Lohrum il y a 12 ans mis à jour par Christof Deininger il y a 9 ans 17

For example you have tags like @home, @office, project1, project2, family. When making plans, one needs to select each tag separately to check each groups (tags) items. Having a shortcut to scroll through the tags, would be a considerable improvement, to easily cycle through the list of tags one by one.

Alex,

the original title of my request was "Add Ctrl-Up/Down to select the next/previous tag in the tag sidebar". What happened here?

Thomas

I edited it to be more general, partly because Ctrl+Up/Down are already used in the notes list and are thus unavailable. Sorry that didn't let you know.

Users posts should not be changed, unless the user has asked for or agreed to do so. Changing posts without consultation is not acceptable.

As for Ctrl+Up/Down i did run a test with the notes list and the search box. Since i did not have a selection, i didn't notice, that the key is already in use. Now i have checked with the help. Of course you are correct here. Still i think Ctrl+Up/Down for tag scrolling would be more useful. I expect to use this many times, whereas i have never used the key the way it works right now.

Thomas, I'm sorry if I have offended you in any way, I just don't agree. Moderators should be able to edit user's posts when they think that the post can be improved. Users are very likely to suggest a solution that is too narrow and could be generalized for the benefit of all - also we shouldn't forget that the more general suggestion will likely get more votes.
Sometimes a very good idea which solves an important problem can get downvoted only because the author was too specific about how it should be implemented.

I think you would agree that the main point here is not that exactly the Ctrl+Up/Down key combination should be used, but that there should be a shortcut at all.

Also I don't quite get how would scrolling the tags list help you in changing the tag selection, which is anyway done only via the search box? Could you please elaborate here?

I understand your (complete) answer. Probably you also wanted to finish the post, because these things just can take up so much time. Anyway, I think it is not easy to divide censorship from constructive advancement. If the changes can be discussed here and thereafter result in a modification of the original post, anyone can reconstruct the story. People can learn from the story, just as they can do now by following our discussion. Well, i am not angry. I got your point. Let's go on.

You're right. This time I indeed was too quick to edit the post - next time I'll write a comment first ;)

Take my example with the tags @office, @home. To check all notes for tag @office you must select that tag either by mouse-click or by selecting it using the searchbox. Next you have to reset the tag-filter and proceed with the same steps for @home. And so on....

My suggestion is an abbreviation for that process.

Oh so you mean changing tag selection, not just scrolling? But what to do when several tags are selected?

Yes, i mean changing the tag selection one by one. It's not easy to find the best description for this process. I wanted to avoid something technical like iterating the tag list.

No need to support this. Iterating the tag list will clear any existing tag filter and only allows to change the selection one by one. Just as Ctrl+U does for 'Untagged'. Iterating the list is a method of its own.

I still want to get to the root of this.. could you tell why you need to see the tags one-by-one? Or is it just to get to some needed tag without using the mouse and without having to type the tag name?

For example, when you use CN as a Todo-Manager you can create a section "Tasks". In that section you create tags like office, private, project1. Now i want to check my tasks for the next couple of days. Therefore i want to check the groups one by one, which is more concise than reading them all at once.

Well I may be wrong, but it seems a bit too specific to your workflow, sorry ) But anyway, if there's a demand for something like this, we'll see it here :)

I suggest to change the title to "Add keyboard shortcuts to select the next/previous tag on the Tag sidebar". My edit now seems incorrect given your explanation.
