It is possible. You can use the "File/Open" command to open a notebook from any folder.

And edit the "backup.folder" parameter in cintanotes.settings to change the location of the backup folder.

If you don't use syncing, then CN's security should be ok for you. It uses AES-256 for encrypting whole notebook file.

The best way would be using SN sync of course, but you've ruled that out.

Maybe it will be easier for you to place the notebook file in a shared network folder and work with it together?
