Quick table creation (like TAB in OneNote)

ofer affias 14 years ago updated by Alex Jenter 9 years ago 3
feature to support quick creation of simple tables, as you write, similar to a feature OneNote offers.

e.g. one starts to write, then press the TAB key, immediately a table will be created with the sentence before in the first cell and the cursor on a 2nd cell (which is empty) and ready for further writing. CTRL+Enter creates another row, etc.

Ability to jump to next/previous page in note preview

Alex Jenter 14 years ago updated 13 years ago 3
Currently the up and down arrows scroll through a list of notes, and right and left arrows scroll line by line through the text of an individual note. How about adding ctrl-left and ctrl-right to jump the number of lines set in 'Preview Text Lines, Max'? This simple addition might satisfy those who want some sort of non-editor preview.

Different note appearance for main window and open note

Erik Bangsund 14 years ago updated by Alex Jenter 14 years ago 0
I would like it if you could pick a different font/size for the notes as they appear in the main window and the note that is currently open. I like having a large font for my open note to make it easy to read. I would like to retain a smaller font size for the notes in the main window so I can see more content.

Open the note scrolled to the same place in text where the note preview currently is

Alex Jenter 14 years ago updated 13 years ago 1
It would be very convenient if after searching for some text and opening the note, the editor position would be set to the position of current search highlight in note preview. This would also diminish the need for an extra search dialog inside of the note editor.

Different icons for main window and editor window

Alex Jenter 14 years ago updated 9 years ago 3
With a note open, ALT-TAB displays two identical CintaNotes icons (the note itself, and the main app), which means that I often get it wrong and need to hit ALT-TAB again to move to the other window. Please provide two icons for the list display when hitting ALT-TAB: One icon for the main CN window, and another icon for open notes, so that I know which window will open when I browse with ALT-TAB.

General link concept

Hackadelic 13 years ago updated by Alex Jenter 7 years ago 7
Develop a general concept for handling links in notes that uniformly covers outbound web links, links to tags, internal links to notes etc.

==== Rationale ====

Currently there are several suggestions regarding links. They could probably be handled smoother by a single uniform concept. (Not talking about implementation here, but really about usability and enabling smooth work flows.)

==== Initial Thoughts ====

For ex. there is the need to keep links contained in clipped or pasted HTML. As these links contain both, a link target and an anchor text, CN would have to support formatted links. The obvious follow-up feature is to let a user enter links manually in the editor [1].

Another request is to support note interlinking. While this reminds of wiki-style interlinking, and even if I prefer a workflow that does not force me get my hands off the keyboard when I'm typing, having to enter something like "[some very long note title]" may not be the perfect work flow for CN, especially if default titles are kept when clipping stuff from the browser [2]. An intellisense-style dropdown in the editor, or "copy note link" / "paste note link" commands (with keyboard shortcuts) may be more appropriate.

Once there, the same concept could be applied to tag links. (Both, a drop-down and a "copy tag link" / "paste tag link" seem appropriate.)

OK, nuff thoughts. :-)

==== Footnotes ====

[1] The question is, how would the user enter such links? IMO, the usual link dialog with two fields (title, url)... sucks. It is much more convenient to enter something in wiki style like [see foo|http://example.com/foo] than go through a dialog. But, seeing the raw form of the link in the note would such, too. (A note with many links would be practically unreadable.) Coming up with a smooth concept here won't be easy, but well worth the intellectual efforts.

[2] When clipping a note from the browser, CN presets the title with the browser window title. That, unfortunately, is not only pretty longish, it also often contains some characters that you can't type on the keyboard. Example: "WordPress › Akismet « WordPress Plugins - Mozilla Firefox". Note the cute little "›" and "«" characters? Go find them on the keyboard. ;-)

I can add a note title, tags, and link, but in order to add the note itself, I have to copy and paste from another application. For some reason, I can't type my note directly.

Open note in external editor. Save changes back to note.

Dave Ferree 13 years ago updated by Alex Jenter 9 years ago 9

Add menu item 'Edit Ext.' , to export selected note contents to user defined editor (such as Sublime Text, WriteMonkey, Notepad ++, Q10, etc). Not intended to replace default editor, or the regular export. Simply a way to streamline the process when you need a little more power.

For handling, I'm thinking that CN could save the note as a temporary text file with a randomly generated name and open it with the external editor. Lock the note but watch the file for changes, so saved data gets imported straight back into CN. When the external editor is closed, import the last changes, delete the file and unlock the note.

Or every note could be backed up with a text file by default, allowing the external editor to reopen the notes directly. And cause incredible bloat...

Since it's impossible to change the color of notes individually, I thought it could be handy to have multiple colors for highlighting. That way, I could add "Important" highlighted in red at the start of my note to see it more easily, or other colors for multiple purposes.

Currently the license.key file is stored in %APPDATA%, which requires registering CintaNotes on every PC it is used on.

In the portable version, it would be more convenient for the license.key file to be stored near the cintanotes.exe file.

I very like how Notepad++ renders indented wrapped lines. It is best explained with a picture below

Note that althoug I used line breakes to demonstrate desired behaviour in CintaNotes, last paragraph on the picture should be a single line.

I use monospace Lucida Console 10pt as a text font in all of my notebooks.
