Allow inclusion of children of excluded (negated) tags

Alex Jenter 9 years ago updated 9 years ago 1

Now inability to include children of excluded tags makes it difficult to build some useful queries.

Implementing this change will make tag hierarchy queries much more powerful.

display cursor-state overwrite/insert

Thomas Lohrum 13 years ago updated by Christof Deininger 9 years ago 2
In the note editor the cursor should reflect which editing-state is active. Right now it is not possible to distinguish, whether overwrite or insert mode is active. Also overwriting should be implemented for title, tags and links.

Store time values in UTC format

Alex Jenter 14 years ago updated by Christof Deininger 9 years ago 3
It seems to me that CN adds a timestamp to a note using the local time of a machine. I was wondering if it would be better to use an UTC timestamp and then translate it to a local time while viewing notes adding the right offset from time zone and daylight savings settings.

remove spaces at the end of the line

Thomas Lohrum 13 years ago updated by Alex Jenter 12 years ago 0
As a side affect of the auto-indent function extra spaces are added to the end of the line. The bug is, that those spaces will not be removed when editing is finished. The spaces should be removed (a) when the cursor moves to the previous or the next line (respectively the cursor is leaving the line) and (b) when the note is saved.

show menu bar on as needed basis

unchmoire 12 years ago updated by Christof Deininger 9 years ago 2

have an option to auto-hide menu bar and show only as needed (mouse hover or keyboard shortcut on any of the main menus).

most importantly, there ought to be an option to place the auto-hiding menu bar (or just even a single button in lieu of the menus) and the search bar at the bottom, and you can even get further creative to even opt to hide the title bar but still be able to move the application window.

the bottom placement of the search box is simply in line with the idea of viewing chronologically sorted notes from top to bottom. this will make the most recent note or search result appear just right above the bottom-placed search bar (while scrolling the older notes up instead of down).

and if you could provide in-line switches anywhere in the search phrase for on-the-fly quick views, tag management, or even a pop-up subsearch, etc., that would certainly be great.

the most "uh-huh" or "what-the" moment, though, is when you'll finally announce that the editor has a switch to suddenly become a modern

Vi editor!

developers also use cintanotes. and an unobtrusive vi editor that floats on top of that would create waves.

Improved conflict-safe synchronization

Trevor Davel 13 years ago updated by Christof Deininger 9 years ago 2
A single user, synchronizing the notes database using Dropbox or similar, can easily lose notes if the copies are not in sync (for example due to a telecom line outage).  The same problem occurs if manually syncing a database using a USB thumb drive.

A solution may be to store the notes in several files, each named with a machine-specific suffix.  Each file is then written on only one machine, avoiding the problem of conflicting changes to the database file.  When CintaNotes loads it can merge the files (for each note select the most recently modified version in any of the files).  Conflicting edits can be handled easily by concatenating the conflicting versions and adding a !conflict tag.  If notes are identified by an ID then renaming is merged automatically.

If the file name included both the machine and user name in this suffix then this approach may also handle the suggestion "Support for multiple users working with same shared notes database".

If each of these files was in an append-only export format (like XML) then they would also contain a full change history of each note.

Add also the page number of the PDF or DOC I am reading, together with the name and path of the file

pc-guru 14 years ago updated by Christof Deininger 9 years ago 4

First thank you for the very useful program. I would have kissed the programmer's feet if cintanotes could add also the page number of the PDF or DOC I am reading, together with the name and path of the file! Having over 2000 PDF files and around 2800 MS Word DOC to flick through, if that function becomes available then your program should be renamed to MagicNotes or CintaMagic!

Shortcut to upper/lower/invert case of selected text

Alex Jenter 13 years ago updated by Christof Deininger 9 years ago 2
An Upper/Lower/Invert case conversion shortcut would be next on my list -- Notepad doesn't have this, but a lot of other editors do, although the example that springs to my mind right now is the Shft+F3 shortcut of MS Word; (by Midas)

Change edit window title from "Edit 'Smth'" to "Smth - edit" or "Smth (edit)"

jww 12 years ago updated by Alex Jenter 11 years ago 1
Could you change the title of edit window to make it more informative? In non-English versions (e.g. Russian) translation of "Edit" can be significantly longer (e.g. "Редактирование"), so you get quite uninformative taskbar items:

make the list of notes look more balanced (link symbol makes list bumpy)

ChrisCN 12 years ago updated by Alex Jenter 10 years ago 3

The title of notes is shifted to the right whenever a link is stored within the note to free some room for the link symbol. This results in a list of notes that feels bumpy to me and makes it hard to scan the list of notes.

my suggestion is to:

  • move the link symbol to the tag line (or any other position that you find appropriate)
  • display the tags shifted to the right regardless of whether a link exists or not

Remembering of tag scroll positition in "only related tags" view

Alex Jenter 9 years ago updated 9 years ago 1

I thought CN used to actually behave like this, but I may be mistaken. It would be nice to have an option to not have the tag list automatically scroll once you click the 'All' or 'Untagged' entry.

Situation is you have a large tag list (longer than one page), and you have scrolled say halfway down the list and clicked a tag. You then want to show all tags again, so you click 'All', and CN will scroll the tag list right back up to the top - which is pretty annoying if you want to move to the next tag in the list after the one you had selected previously (ie you have to scroll all the way back down the list again). I have 'Only Related Tags' enabled by the way.

If CN could not scroll the tag list back to the beginning when you click 'All' or 'Untagged', that would be great (I would be happy for the option to be disabled by default, ie current behaviour is the default unless you change it).
